What's for Dinner is a household dinner-planning app. This page explains what data it collects, why, and where it goes — including for the Chrome extension, which is the same account and the same data as the website.
Everything below is data you choose to enter. There's no ad tracking, no analytics pixels, and no third-party trackers of any kind on this site.
The extension does one thing: when you click its icon, it sends the current tab's URL — plus your personal connection token — to our own server (dinnercal.com) so it can fetch that page and pull out the recipe. That's the entire round trip. It doesn't read or transmit anything else on the page, run in the background, or talk to any server besides dinnercal.com.
Permissions it asks for, and why:
activeTab) — to know which page to fetch and parse.host_permissions) — to send that fetch request. It cannot reach any other site.Scan, Import, Suggest-a-recipe, nutrition estimates, and voice search are optional features that send the relevant text or photo to Google's Gemini API to do the extraction or generation. That content is used only to produce your response — the underlying data (your account, recipes, calendar) still lives solely on our own server either way. If you never tap those buttons, nothing gets sent anywhere but our own server.
If you link accounts under Family, or explicitly share a recipe, a month's plan, or a grocery list with someone, the people you chose can see what you shared. We don't share your data with anyone else.
We run a private analytics dashboard over our own database for our own planning purposes (things like which recipes get used most). It's reachable only over an SSH tunnel from our own machine — never exposed to the internet — and it isn't used for advertising or shared with anyone outside the project.
There's no self-serve delete button yet. If you'd like your account and everything in it removed, reach out to whoever invited you, or contact us directly, and we'll delete it.
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
